Spain Is The Fourth Country With The Most Sustainable Travellers

Spain is the fourth country with the most sustainable travellers

A recent study of more than 13,000 travellers to find out the reasons why a trip is cancelled or simply never booked. The study revealed the trend of sustainable travellers: those who, at least once in the last 6 months, have decided not to travel to minimize their carbon footprint.

Main conclusions

The key findings of the study reveal: –

  • In Spain, 17% of Spaniards who have decided not to travel or have cancelled their travel plans in the last 6 months have done so to contribute to the well-being of the planet.
  • Spain is the fourth country with the highest number of sustainable travellers behind Germany, the United States and France, and ahead of other countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Brazil.
  • Sustainable travellers represent a much younger than average profile: 62% are millennial or belong to Generation Z, while they only make up 41% of traditional travellers.
  • In addition, 8 out of 10 sustainable travellers have booked train tickets in the last 6 months, a much greener alternative than the plane. However, only 56% of traditional travellers have opted for the train in this period of time.

For the tourism industry, which is responsible for 8% of the emission of greenhouse gases, the emergence of this new consumer profile represents a great challenge to overcome.

“Our research shows that Spanish travellers, especially the youngest, are increasingly aware of the environment and the conservation of the planet, so it is essential that tourism service providers conceive of sustainability as an important pillar to have in your advertising actions”.

More and more hotels, airlines and even tourist destinations are applying sustainable measures to join this trend and not lose the loyalty of a customer who is in the process of transformation.
